Programmable Technology Will Put the Pork Industry at the Cutting Edge of the Agri-Food Sector

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, January 14, 2025 – The Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN) today unveiled the sixth in a series of 11 stories illustrating the success of its two 2023 funding calls.

CAAIN’s mandate from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) is to fund technological responses to the most significant opportunities and challenges facing the nation’s agri-food producers and primary processors. That means supporting promising efforts with the potential to provide economic or environmental value. The featured stories demonstrate that CAAIN is doing just that, as does the $32.4M it is investing in 36 projects with a combined total value of roughly $100M.

“MatrixSpec’s Marbling Meter represented an exciting breakthrough in pork inspecting,” said CAAIN CEO, Darrell Petras. “No longer would inspectors have to cut into loins to determine quality and value. The existing approach damages the meat, effectively reducing profitability. Furthermore, any evaluation process that depends on manual inspection is, by definition, prone to subjectivity. By contributing $325,707 to Development of an Automatic Pork Quality Grading (APoG) System for Sustainable Pork Production’s total project value of $846,839, we are supporting the development of an AI-based tool that will lead to a truly objective, standards-based meat quality assessment process.”
