The  proposed project aims to develop an automated solution for real-time, in-field mapping of nitrate concentrations. This cutting-edge technology will provide farmers with high-resolution nitrate maps across their fields, enabling precise, data-driven decisions on fertilizer application. Unlike traditional methods, which rely on time-consuming and costly laboratory analyses, this technology can be placed directly into a UTV or pick-up truck bed to carry out soil testing directly in the field in real time. By optimizing the application of these fertilizers, substantial savings could be achieved for farmers, estimated between $550 million and $1 billion (Agriculture & Agri-food Canda, 2022). Reducing nitrate losses will help minimize groundwater and surface water pollution and limit GHG emissions, thus improving the environmental footprint of agriculture. Consequently, this will significantly reduce societal costs related to environmental and health damages. Lastly, the proposed solution for the project will help make the agricultural sector less vulnerable to regulations related to fertilizer use or GHG emissions.
