Abbotsford’s Bakerview EcoFarm Improving Bovine GHG Measurement and Reduction Technology

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, February 4, 2025 – The Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN) today unveiled the seventh in a series of 11 stories illustrating the success of its two 2023 funding calls.

CAAIN’s mandate from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) is to fund technological responses to the most significant opportunities and challenges facing the nation’s agri-food producers and primary processors. That means supporting promising efforts with the potential to provide economic or environmental value. The featured stories demonstrate that CAAIN is doing just that, as does the $32.4M it is investing in 36 projects with a combined total value of roughly $100M.

“Our portfolio of funded projects is as diverse as it is impressive,” explained Darrell Petras, CAAIN’s CEO. “We support everything from the costly development of autonomous farm equipment at one end of the spectrum to Bakerview EcoFarm’s impressive environmental initiative, On-Farm Direct Measurements to Validate Traceability and Develop GHG Monitoring Tools for Canadian Dairy Producers. The title, while long, is descriptive and self explanatory. The work of the research team, led by Bakerview and including TheoryMesh Corp., FortisBC, and PT3 Biotech, is all the more impressive when one considers its modest $294,167 price tag, of which we are contributing $71,556.”

Bakerview anticipates that its GHG measurement and reduction processes and technology will allow it to maintain its environmental leadership role, spreading its brand as it markets directly to consumers, thereby creating a demand for its sustainable products. Furthermore, the results of the CAAIN/ISED-supported research will advance the Dairy Farmers of Canada’s goal of presiding over a net-zero sector by 2050.

“Obviously,” concluded Mr. Petras, “There’s a profit motive behind Bakerview’s work. And that is as it should be. But at its heart, this project is about reducing the Canadian dairy sector’s GHG emissions and helping our nation’s agriculture industry continue to build on its impressive environmental track record.”
