Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, October 22, 2024 – The Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN) today unveiled the third in a series of 11 stories illustrating the success of its two 2023 funding calls.
CAAIN’s mandate from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) is to fund technological responses to the most significant opportunities and challenges facing the nation’s agri-food producers and primary processors. That means supporting promising efforts with the potential to provide economic or environmental value. The featured stories demonstrate that CAAIN is doing just that, as does the $33M it is investing in 36 projects with a combined total value of roughly $100M.
“Our project partners are remarkable for their commitment, brilliance, and entrepreneurial spirit,” explained Darrell Petras, CAAIN’s CEO. “Which is why, when we share their innovations, we like to introduce Canadians to the person behind the curtain and provide some context that reveals how the new technology came to be—the genesis of the genius, if you will. In the case of today’s story, we are delighted to present a true renaissance woman, Dr. Shari Van de Pol. Computer engineer, veterinarian, technological visionary, musician, painter, amateur architect, and mother. She does it all, including revolutionising the Canadian dairy industry with a software platform that is nothing short of extraordinary. We feel privileged to have committed $800,000 to supporting Creation of Dairy Management, Modelling, and Collaborative Framework System to Facilitate Predictive and Data-Driven Decision-Making in Canada’s $2.4M total cost. Our nation’s milk producers will benefit from the work of Dr. Van de Pol and her team for years to come.”
